What are your Dashboard Plans Poll Results

In late March I launched a poll “What are your Dashboard Plans” to better understand what the traditional community of SAP Dashboards users are up to.

Realities of the Business Intelligence marketplace today.

1. Many customers are increasingly using multiple vendors to service needs users, across multiple business units, job roles and devices.

2. Speed for delivering value back to business users and user adoption is extremely important criteria for success.

3. There are more data visualization tools, frameworks, and options than ever before for creating visualization apps and dashboards.

What did the poll capture?

  • We took an informal approach to collect basic feedback to assess:
  • Generally how satisfied are customers with their current dashboard tools?
  • What dashboard tools are currently being used, and what new tools are planned in the future?
  • How important are emerging features for dashboards?

Exploration of Dashboard Tools

In our poll we allowed developers to indicate one or multiple tools used for dashboards. What we learned is that a high percentage, 56% of users are utilizing only one dashboard tool currently, while 43% use 2-3 dashboard tools. One ambitious developer claimed to use 8 dashboard tools. Looking ahead more than 60% of the surveyed will use more than 1 dashboard tool, presumably to fill in a wider range of dashboard needs and to expand skill sets.

Interesting Findings about Dashboard Tools

  • LOTs of customers are using or planning to use Excel/PowerPivot to deliver dashboard functionality to users.
  • Not enough customers have discovered DecisionPoint which I believe is a premier alternative to SAP Dashboards from the same team that brought us XWIS
  • There are a lot of SAP Dashboards that are happy with their dashboard development tools.
  • Those SAP Dashboard developers seem divided between Design Studio and SAP Lumira as alternatives but Excel is still the preferred alternative to SAP Dashboards..

Using your mouse you can hover over the outer circular bands to view the total number and % of users. Hovering your within the visualization will uncover the flow of users between technologies based on existing and future dashboard tools. There are certainly other ways to visualize and slice/dice this usage data.

How Happy are you with your dashboard tools?

Not enough data was captured across all tools to accurately compare the level of satisfaction across tools but the following does summarize the overall level of satisfaction with current dashboard tools. If I am a software vendor and this is a distribution of my customers, I would be VERY nervous. We did find that those who are jumping ship or looking for alternatives seem to looking at multiple vendors for future solutions.

How important are the following features?

We found that rapid design and deployment with no coding and ad-hoc analysis are by far two of the most important features for dashboards. Mobility had the most “Very Important” and “Will be Important Soon”, which reflects some of the recent stories around mobile adoption. Many of our customers for instance are in the process of upgrading core services to deploy mobile-enabled dashboards.  The feature-set that was most divided was location intelligence which from previous surveys actually increased in importance from the last 2 years.

Needless to say we will run this survey again going into 2015 so I can report back the changes over time.
