Like many of you, I have believe that maps should come with every Business Intelligence tool. This is a vision that I believed at BusinessObjects and made a reality at Centigon Solutions as a third party and now carry forward partnering with other companies at CMaps Analytics. We have come a long way from static maps or manually placing pins over images!
WHY MAPS TODAY ARE REACHING MATURITY
We can thank Apple, Google, and GPS for transforming the map into the standard interface for viewing geospatial information as consumers. Second, we can thank all of the passionate GIS professionals and open-source initiatives for relinquishing control of geographic information systems and data from the grips of a few companies. Mapping is NOT an easy task, as evident by Apple’s struggles and Google’s continued dominance in the consumer space. However, delivering maps to information consumers as become much easier!
SAP HAS A GOOD START, BUT HAS A WAYS TO GO
An interactive map for viewing data provides great advantages over traditional bar charts and tables. In the last year, SAP has finally addressed a hole in their product lineup, by including maps out of the box first in Lumira with ESRI, and now with Design Studio with OpenStreet Maps. We have seen the demands and requirements in geo change dramatically over the last couple of years, so points and shapes are a good start as fundamentals but require a level of interactivity and enrichment and server-side / cloud horsepower to make the jump from maps to location analytics.
HOW SAP CAN BEEF UP ITS GEO STORY
- The existing BI platform is not compatible with spatial data types in Oracle spatial, TeraData, POSTGIS, and other geo-databases.
- HANA is the ultimate geospatial number crunching machine. I presume that should be where a bulk share of investment should be going.
- Global geocoding shouldn’t be a nice to have. It should be a requirement
- Keep listening to customers.. That is the number 1 inspiration for what made my team successful delivering Location Intelligence with CMaps Analytics to over 250 SAP BusinessObjects customers over the last 5 years.
